Protein and Losing Weight: How Protein Helps You Lose Fat

Protein and Losing Weight: How Protein Helps You Lose Fat

Whether you are just beginning your fitness journey or have been at it for a while, one thing remains crucial in losing weight: your nutrition. And within nutrition, protein - also known as protein - plays a key role. In this blog, we explain why protein weight loss is essential for effective and healthy weight loss, and how you can optimally use it in your daily routine.

💪 Why is protein weight loss important when losing weight?

Protein is one of the three macronutrients (alongside fats and carbohydrates) and plays a unique role in fat loss:

  • Muscle preservation: During weight loss, you lose not only fat but also muscle mass. Protein helps preserve your muscle, especially when you exercise.

  • Satiety: Proteins make you feel full for a long time. As a result, you automatically eat less.

  • Thermal effect: Your body uses more energy to digest protein than it does with carbohydrates or fats. This boosts your metabolism.

🔥 With a high-protein diet, you burn more calories - even at rest.

📊 How much protein do you need?

The exact amount of protein you need depends on your weight, goals and activity level. A general guideline for losing weight is:

  • 1.6 - 2.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight

For a 65-kg woman who wants to lose weight and exercises regularly, this amounts to about 100-140 grams of protein per day.

👉 Tip from BeyondFit: Track your daily intake in an app such as MyFitnessPal or Yazio to gain insight.

🥗 Best protein sources for fat loss

🥩 Animal sources:

  • Chicken breast, turkey

  • Low-fat cottage cheese or Skyr

  • Eggs

  • Salmon, tuna

  • Minced beef (lean)

🌱 Plant sources:

  • Lentils, chickpeas

  • Tofu, tempeh

  • Hemp, pea or rice protein

  • Quinoa, amaranth

🥤 Protein shakes:

A quick way to increase your protein intake, especially after your workout or when you're on the go. Choose a whey isolate or plant-based alternative with no added sugars.

⚖️ Protein and fat loss: what does the science say?

Multiple studies show that people who follow a high-protein diet:

  • Losing more fat

  • Losing less muscle mass

  • Experiencing a lower feeling of hunger

  • Easier to maintain weight

A study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that higher protein intake led to spontaneously lower calorie intake, without participants consciously paying attention.

✅ Summary: This is how protein helps you lose weight

Do you want to lose weight effectively while staying strong and fit? Then a high-protein diet is essential. By including more protein in your diet:

  • Lose fat and preserve muscle

  • Feel satiated longer

  • Stimulate your metabolism

If you combine a high-protein diet with strength training and adequate sleep, you will achieve lasting results.

📌 BeyondFit Tip:

Our coaches at BeyondFit will help you with a customized personal nutrition plan, including exact protein intake tailored to your body and goals.

🔁 Frequently asked questions about 'protein weight loss'

Can I also eat too much protein?
Yes, but it is rare. Up to about 2.5 grams per kg of body weight is safe for healthy adults.

Are proteins only important for strength athletes?
No. Proteins are also essential for muscle maintenance and satiety with cardio or a general weight loss goal.

Which is better: animal or vegetable protein?
Both are good. Animal proteins are often more complete in terms of amino acids, but a good mix with plant sources also works great.

Why you shouldn't wait until January to get started

Why you shouldn't wait until January to get started

Did you know that 90% of people who start a fitness endeavor on Jan. 1 drop out within three months? It's a shocking statistic, but not surprising. Every year, millions of people set ambitious goals with the best intentions, only to fall back into old habits by March.

What goes wrong? And more importantly, how can you avoid becoming part of this statistic? The answer is simple: don't wait until January. Start your fitness journey today.

Why January resolutions fail

New Year's resolutions often fail because they are based on external pressure rather than internal motivation. The hype of "new year, new me" often leads to unrealistic expectations and a lack of proper planning.

  • Busy gyms and overwhelming routines: Starting in January means competing with a wave of other resolution-makers, which can be daunting.
  • Burnout: Overambitious goals without a sustainable plan can lead to exhaustion within just a few weeks.
  • Procrastinating: Waiting until January gives you permission to delay action, which in turn can lead to even more delay.

The benefits of starting now

Instead of joining the January rush, take control of your health today. Here's why:

  1. Get a head start on your goals: By starting now, you will have already established a routine by the time January comes around. While others are just getting started, you are already on track.
  2. Fewer crowds: Fall and early winter are quieter periods in gyms and fitness centers. This gives you more space to use equipment and fewer distractions.
  3. Mental calm: Starting now gives you a chance to build momentum without the added pressure of New Year's expectations. You also avoid the stress of fitting new habits into an already busy post holiday season.
  4. Get ahead of the holidays: If you start now, you'll feel stronger, healthier and more energetic during the holidays. Plus, you'll enter the new year with a positive mindset.
  5. Sustainable habits: By starting at your own pace instead of a January printout, you can create sustainable, long-term habits that stick.

How to start today

If you're ready to take control of your health and fitness, here are a few tips:

  1. Set realistic goals: Focus on small, achievable goals, such as walking 10,000 steps a day or exercising three times a week.
  2. Make a plan: Establish a weekly workout schedule and meal plan that fits your lifestyle.
  3. Find support: Join a fitness class, work with a coach, or find a friend to keep you accountable.
  4. Schedule a free intake at BeyondFit: Let us help you design a customized fitness plan. During your free intake, you'll receive personalized guidance to ensure your success.
  5. Celebrate your progress: Reward yourself for milestones, no matter how small. Progress is progress!

Don't wait for the "perfect" moment

The truth is that there is never a perfect time to begin your fitness journey. Life remains busy, and challenges remain. But by starting now, you give yourself the best chance for success - not just for a few months, but in the long run.

Skip the January wave and start today. Your future self will thank you.

Let BeyondFit help you take the first step. Whether you're looking for a personal training plan, nutritional advice or a supportive community, we're ready to help you reach your goals - starting now.

Losing weight responsibly, how do you do it?

Losing weight responsibly, how do you do it?

Would you like to lose weight in a healthy and responsible way? On the Internet you can find many ways to lose weight fast, but not all of them are healthy. In this article we will tell you exactly how you can lose weight responsibly.

Losing weight quickly and responsibly

Often we want to lose weight as fast as possible and read online all kinds of tricks that would allow you to lose 10 kilos within a few weeks. But losing 10 kg quickly is not responsible. It is more important that you learn how to handle food and exercise in a healthy way and work on a strong foundation so you can lose weight gradually and responsibly each week. If you put yourself on a strict diet, for example, you will not keep it up for long and the pounds will come back on just as quickly. It is wiser to make a weekly menu, for example.

Lose excess pounds with the Weight Loss program.

Do you think it's time to really lose weight now? But don't feel like a very strict diet?

✔ Working to build a sustainable foundation
✔ Full support
✔ Applying good habits

Responsible weight loss weekly menu

Losing weight responsibly starts with healthy eating. So it is advisable to determine in advance what you will eat and the most logical period to plan this is a week. Make your own "responsible weight loss weekly menu" in which you determine which meals you will make this week. Important to keep in mind maximum calorie intake and ideally you will keep track of your actual calorie intake during the week.

Set realistic goals

When you want to lose weight responsibly, it is important that you first set realistic goals for yourself. If you want to lose 10 pounds within three weeks, unfortunately this is not realistic and you will only end up disappointed. Set realistic goals that are easier to keep to and that you can always adjust later. Think about what you want to achieve and why you actually want to lose weight. Do you want to feel fitter again, have more energy, lose fat or be able to feel confident in your own body again?

Losing weight responsibly

Healthy and responsible weight loss

Healthy and responsible weight loss? To lose weight in a healthy and responsible way, it is important that you do not suddenly change your entire diet. Try to change unhealthy habits step by step and become aware of your eating pattern. Do you notice that you always automatically grab an unhealthy snack when you watch TV? Then adjust this and replace it with a healthier variety. Do not forbid yourself anything but try to have a positive attitude towards food. To lose weight responsibly, it is important that you lose weight gradually.

Losing weight responsibly without dieting

You probably want to lose weight as quickly as possible and get rid of those excess pounds. There are several diets that promise to lose 10 pounds within a few weeks, but these crash diets are often counterproductive. If you want to lose weight responsibly, it is best to do so without a diet. It is important to eat a varied diet in order to get all the nutrients you need. By removing some nutrients from your diet, you may miss out on important nutrients. You must learn to eat responsibly and lose weight. Add enough fruits and vegetables to your diet as well as other nutrients such as protein, carbohydrates, fats and fiber. In our other article you can read more about how to lose weight without a diet.

Keeping track of your nutrition will also give you a better understandingof what you are eating and make you more aware of your diet.

Calorie counting

To lose weight, you must be in a calorie deficit. This does not mean that you have to eat less, but that you have to adopt a healthy eating pattern and feed your body appropriately. In addition, it is important to be active in order to be in a calorie deficit. By tracking your nutrition, you can easily keep track of how many calories you are taking in and how much you can eat to lose weight responsibly. There are several apps that allow you to easily see how many calories you can eat per day to lose weight healthily and where you can track your nutrition. Keeping track of your nutrition also gives you a better understanding of what you eat and makes you more aware of your diet. Want to know more about tracking your nutrition? We wrote an article about calorie counting and how it can help you lose weight.

Control emotion eating

Do you tend to eat when you are emotional and does this often lead back to disappointment and regret? When times are tough, we sometimes tend to eat in the hope that we will feel better afterwards. You then eat not because you are hungry but to fulfill another need. Emotion eating can be the reason why you are not succeeding in losing weight. It is important that you gain control over your emotions and not let yourself go completely when one thing is against you. A small setback does not mean that your whole process is lost.

Losing weight and exercising responsibly

Exercise is essential for healthy weight loss. Losing weight responsibly and exercising go hand in hand, but then again, it is not necessary to exercise for hours a day. It is important that you exercise regularly, in a way that is comfortable for you. You don't have to take out an expensive gym membership to lose weight quickly and responsibly; there are plenty of free ways for you to exercise. Choose a sport you like and go for a walk every day, ride your bike to work or take the stairs instead of the elevator. Do you work in an office every day? Then go for a walk with a colleague during your break, for example.

Losing weight responsibly tips

We understand that losing weight responsibly can be difficult and that there is a lot to find online about nutrition, dieting and exercise. That's why we offer a few more tips on how you can lose weight responsibly.

  • Eat regularly and don't skip meals
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Don't forbid yourself anything
  • Add more protein to your diet
  • Eat a variety of foods and find healthier alternatives
  • Take 7,500 steps a day
  • Find a sport you enjoy

Losing weight without a diet

Losing weight can be a challenge for many and there are 100 different diets online to lose weight such as a keto diet, crash diet or detox cures. These diets are often not as effective as they seem and often you soon fall back into your old patterns. In our other article, we'll tell you more about why a diet plan just doesn't work. Fortunately, you can easily lose weight without a diet. If you want to lose weight, it is important that you adopt a healthy eating pattern. A healthy way to lose weight is by increasing your protein intake. For this you do not have to change your whole eating pattern but you can easily add protein to your daily diet. Read more below about how protein can help you lose weight.

How does losing weight with protein work?

Proteins are important building blocks for our bodies and play an important role in building and repairing muscles, bones, skin, hair and nails. Protein helps to keep you feeling full longer after eating and slows down digestion, making you less likely to feel hungry and therefore easier to reduce your calorie intake. This can lead to weight loss, especially if you use protein to replace carbohydrates or fats in your diet. Protein also ensures that you do maintain your muscle mass when you lose weight.

How much protein do I need to lose weight?

How much protein you need to lose weight depends on a number of factors such as your age, weight, height, gender and how active you are. In general, it is recommended that you eat about 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. If you want to lose weight, it is recommended that you eat between 1 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. When you are very active and do a lot of sports, your body needs more protein to repair muscles and you can eat about 1.6 - 1.8 grams of protein.

What are the most proteins in

Protein is found in a variety of foods and you don't have to stick to a strict diet to increase your protein intake. Protein is of course found a lot in eggs but other products high in protein are lean meats such as chicken and turkey, dairy products such as low-fat French cottage cheese, fish and nuts and seeds. In addition, it is good to choose whole grain cereals such as oatmeal or quinoa.

Reduce muscle pain

Reduce muscle pain

Would you like to become more muscular? When you train heavily, your muscles are overworked and tears develop in your muscles. This can eventually cause muscle soreness. Even though muscle soreness makes you feel like you had a good workout, it can sometimes be very annoying and interfere with your daily movements. In this article, we tell you what to do about muscle soreness.

What to do about muscle pain

How do you get less muscle pain and what really helps against muscle pain? When you suffer from muscle pain, you naturally want to reduce it as quickly as possible. Prevention is always better than cure. Therefore, always take care of a good warm up to make your muscles active. With this you make your muscles loose and warm so they can do their work better during a workout. In addition, it is also important to do a cooling down at the end of your workout. When you do suffer from muscle soreness, of course you want to reduce it as quickly as possible. The most important thing is to give your muscles enough rest to recover. So do not start training extra when you already have muscle pain, because this can lead to overtraining and eventually maybe even injury. However, it is important to keep moving, but do so with light intensity.

The right foods to reduce muscle soreness

The right nutrition can help relieve muscle soreness after exercise. Proteins are an important nutrient to help your muscles recover faster. They keep your muscles healthy and strong. After a hard workout, try to eat a protein-rich snack within half an hour. For example, protein is found a lot in chicken, cottage cheese, protein shakes or an egg itself. In addition, it is important to eat enough as well. After a hard workout, your body needs energy again to recover and the right food is important for this.

Reduce muscle soreness after strength training

Especially with strength training, you may experience muscle soreness after a hard workout. When you have muscle pain after exercising, it means that your muscles are overloaded and they need time to recover. When you do a lot of strength training, it is smart to train one muscle group per day and alternate this. For example, train your legs one day and your arms the next day to give your muscles retraining time and reduce muscle soreness. After all, when your muscles are already a bit overloaded, it is not smart to overload them even further.

Tips to reduce muscle pain

Muscle pain can't just go away in 1 second. Fortunately, there are a number of ways you can get rid of your sore muscles faster. Read below for some tips on how you can reduce your own muscle soreness after exercise:

  • Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol after a hard workout

  • Do a good warm-up and cool down

Losing weight without dieting

Losing weight without dieting

To lose weight you do not have to go on a strict diet. This is often counterproductive and the pounds fly back on just as quickly as they came off. When you want to lose weight, it is important that you do this in a healthy way, and do not try to starve yourself or change your entire eating pattern in one day. In this article we will give you 6 tips on how to lose weight without a diet.

Eat consciously

If you want to lose weight without dieting, it is important to become aware of what you are putting in your mouth. Often we eat without thinking about it, perhaps you automatically grab a snack every day when you get home or you often start eating when you are bored. It is important to become aware of when you eat and what your habits are. Try to focus as much as possible on your food when you eat, so don't watch TV or do other things in the meantime. This way you are more often distracted and not busy with your food so you often don't realize how much you are eating and also don't immediately realize when you are full.

Losing weight without dieting

Change bad habits

Changing your entire diet overnight is often of little use. It is difficult to maintain a strict diet for a long period of time, which often causes you to fall back into your old habits and the kilos just fly right back on. That is why it is important to change bad habits step by step. For example, start by drinking more water and less soda, and limit yourself to one snack a night. Don't forbid yourself everything right away and only move on to the next habit when you can maintain one well.

✔ That completely fits your wants and needs;
✔ That you can apply for the rest of your life;
✔ Not a rigid diet that you won't easily maintain but an eating pattern that is accessible to your life.

Portion size

As mentioned earlier, conscious eating is important when you want to lose weight without dieting. This includes your portion sizes. When making your food, pay attention to portion sizes and quantities. Often your brain does not notice that you are full until later, so we tend to overeat. For example, at dinner, scoop up only 1 serving and wait a while before finishing your plate. Don't keep eating from the pan all the time either, this often causes you to unconsciously eat much more than you realize. Want to know more about determining the right portion size? Read our 7 tips for proper portion size.

Losing weight without dieting with water

That water is good for you we probably don't have to tell you anymore. Water can help you lose weight in a healthy way. We often think that feeling hungry is because we need to eat more, but this can also be the sign that you are thirsty and need to drink more water. Water can largely eliminate your feeling of hunger. Drink a large glass of water half an hour before you eat, so you will be fuller faster while eating and therefore will need to eat less.

Get enough sleep and avoid stress

Having stress is one of the biggest reasons why we start eating extra and often fail to lose weight. When you are stressed you often put all kinds of things in your mouth and we often don't consciously think about what we eat. To avoid stress, adequate sleep is also important. When you get too little sleep, you are also more likely to eat unhealthy snacks to replenish your energy levels. So make sure you get enough sleep and avoid stress as much as possible.
