With burnout, “just start exercising again” is too simplistic. Movement can be part of recovery support, but the right load differs from person to person and should not be considered separately from professional guidance.
Burnout is not a fitness problem
Burnout involves persistent exhaustion and problems with functioning. A personal trainer cannot diagnose or treat burnout. If you suspect burnout, contact your GP and follow the recovery plan from the professionals involved.
Dose rather than compensate
When movement is appropriate, a short walk or light activity may be a starting point. Choose a level that does not lead to clear additional exhaustion and plan recovery around it. A good day is not an invitation to catch up on everything.
See recovery as more than an evening off. Sleep, light movement, calm conditions and enough space between demanding activities can provide support together. A weekend or holiday does not automatically undo months of overload. If burnout is suspected, capacity should be discussed with your GP, occupational physician or another professional involved; this is not a self-directed recovery plan.
- Start with a small, predictable dose.
- Look at the effect later that day and the following day.
- Track load and recovery together.
- Increase only when things remain stably positive.
Work with the right professionals
During burnout, a GP, occupational physician, psychologist or other professionals may have a role. Coaching can only be appropriate as an addition when the boundaries, responsibilities and coordination are clear.
