Exercise as You Get Older: Stay Strong and Active

Getting older does not mean you have to stop moving. The best activity is one that fits your starting point, preferences and capacity, and that you can repeat with enjoyment.

There is no single right sport for older adults

Older adults are not one homogeneous group. Age does not tell the whole story of what you can do or enjoy. Experience, fitness, daily activities, preferences and possible limitations all matter.

Why strength and balance deserve attention

Dutch movement guidelines advise adults to move at least 150 minutes per week at moderate intensity and to do muscle- and bone-strengthening activities at least twice a week. For older adults, balance exercises are also recommended. This is general guidance, not a personal prescription.

Starting after a long break

Begin with a level that feels manageable and learn the movements carefully. Build up gradually and allow recovery. When in doubt about your capacity, consult a doctor or appropriate movement professional first.
